There is an indication of a romance, but it is unexpected. Now, Jules can get access to all of the Queen’s secrets like finding out if the Queen really eats the heart of her daughters to stay alive. As expected, Jules doesn’t heed the warning and gets a position as the Queen’s handmaiden. She loses someone very close to her and on the top of that, she receives an ominous warning to stay away from the Queen at all costs. Jules’ life starts crashing down after her arrival at Everless. Jules and her father had to flee the comfort of the Everless estate after being witness to an incident between Lord Liam Gerling and his brother Roan, Jules’s friend. Later, Jules makes the difficult choice to take a job in the Everless estate, the place she grew up in when her father was the blacksmith. Despondent, Jules arrives at a decision to sell her blood for coin but due to a commotion at the bloodletters’, she is forced to flee home. Seventeen-year-old Jules Ember is desperate to help her ailing father, put a roof over their head and stay out of debt. Jules, the protagonist, is seen heading to the Everless estate and straight to dangerous ground. The reader doesn’t have to read long to get pulled into the plot and the heart of the action. This is author Sara Holland’s debut novel and although, this is not a spectacular debut it does shine in some parts.
